“If you knew that you only had twenty-four hours left to live, what would you do differently?”
For most people, I think they would go about listing a dozen or more changes. Basically, that means what people normally do, is not what they feel is important.
Here are some possible reasons this could occur:
a. People are forced into putting their life on hold.
b. People willingly put their life on hold, in order to make ends meet.
c. People rationalize reasons to put their life on hold (see Rationalization).
d. People don’t make the effort to live life fully.
If I only had twenty-four hours, I would still go to work, but I would leave a little early. I would do most of the same things, savoring them for the last time. I’d probably spend time writing short letters to people. I guess that means that I’m not staying in contact with friends, so I’d better make a point of working on that one.
There is a section in this book called “Things to Appreciate.” Part of the reason for it is so that people can realize that we live on a planet that is almost like being in heaven (see Heaven). If you can really appreciate that section, then almost every moment in life can be truly wonderful. I guess I need to make a list, to remind me to do things like: enjoy breathing the air and drinking cold water (see Happiness). In that way, I will remember that even simple things are precious.
Guess what? You only have # hours left to live, so what are you going to do differently?
