Homosexuality

I included this topic, because many might think that “to have children” is an indication that homosexuality is wrong. That would be an incorrect interpretation. 

Most people view homosexuality as wrong, based upon religious reasons. Since traditional religions are based upon a traditional God, religious text is used as validation that homosexuality is wrong. For most religions, even that justification is thin, as the texts are often vague in their meaning, and often different texts make the issue even more questionable. Describing anything using a Biblical reference (Sodom/sodomy) is also a subliminal way to connect a fictitious hedonistic city (which worshiped sex and money) with something evil. 

The biggest problem I have with the religious argument is that those that are guilty of traditional sins are often the ones who are the most vocally against homosexuality. I dislike hypocrisy, just as Jesus has been quoted as saying, “Let he who is without sin be the first to cast the stone.” I almost think that the biggest sinners are the ones pointing at others, so as to divert attention from them or to try to achieve atonement for their sins.  Sex out of wedlock is also considered immoral, yet it is commonplace. Masturbation, sexual harassment, sex before 18 years of age, oral sex are all considered immoral or illegal, yet these might be accepted by the same people who claim homosexuality is a bigger issue. I may be incorrect, but in religions, sin is a sin. If you use the religious argument, it is totally hypocritical to criticize others while you go on doing your own traditionally immoral sexual conduct (and that’s not even mentioning those that kill, or support others that kill, under the pretext of a war on terrorism).

As far as homosexuality being an unnatural act, I have to question that too. The religious might claim that it is not natural, because it doesn’t lead to procreation. But there are other sexual acts that don’t lead to procreation either, that are generally accepted like: heterosexual kissing, French kissing, and petting. Masturbation is also common among both sexes. Heterosexual couples also do oral and anal sodomy. If a man and woman can perform these acts, then it doesn’t seem that unnatural for homosexuals to do the same thing.

I don’t advocate homosexuality, just like I don’t advocate sex before 18, but I see both of them as a fact of life. I see it as an ongoing experiment in human behavior in which we advise, but we don’t treat it as a sin or an immoral act. Just because you feel revulsion at homosexuals kissing, doesn’t mean that it is wrong. Children often experience the same revulsion seeing their parents kiss. Children are often traumatized if they see their parents having sex, but that changes over time since it is viewed as normal. Most homosexual relationships are really not that different than heterosexual ones. They are two people who are searching for a mate with the lucky ones finding someone to love (see Love).
